SPCA on target with animal sterilisations
Stopping the cycle of too many unwanted animals roaming the streets.
Forty-four animals were sterilised during a Mass Sterilisation Day, held by the Brakpan SPCA, on Sunday, last week.
The initiative, by the local society and a private veterinarian, was held at the Cosy Corner Shellhole in Brenthurst.
It offers pet owners who cannot afford to have their animals sterilised at the normal fee, the opportunity to do so at a nominal fee.
Jaco Pieterse, from the National Council of SPCAs, assisted on the day.
“We encourage sterilisation of animals, and days like this are important,” he said.
“There are far too many animals without homes and we must strive to stop the cycle of too many unwanted animals roaming the streets.”
Animals were sent home to recover along with a few goodies, such as a new bed, blanket and food.
The Brakpan SPCA aims to sterilise 1000 animals this year, and is well on its way to reaching this target, with 318 sterilisations to date.
Another Mass Sterilisation Day is scheduled for June 5, in Tsakane.
It is important to note that this service is offered to indigent Brakpan residents and pensioners only.
