Car thief arrested after crashing stolen vehicle

Unknown man jumped into the vehicle and sped off.

A 32-year old man was injured in a head-on collision after allegedly stealing an idling vehicle from a petrol station in Brakpan, on Tuesday.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, the incident took place after a couple drove into the petrol station at around noon to fill up their Mazda 3.

“While the driver was in conversation with the petrol attendant and his wife was seated in the passenger seat, an unknown man jumped into the vehicle and sped off,”  said Kgasago.

“The wife jumped out of the moving vehicle and sustained an injury to her left arm.

“She was rushed to the Life Springs Parkland Hospital.

“Due to the the thief’s reckless driving, the stolen Mazda crashed head-on into a red Volkswagen Polo along Vlakfontein Road.

“The EMPD Brakpan Precinct commander came across the accident scene and called for backup.”

The thief and the driver of the red Polo sustained injuries and were transported to the Pholosong Hospital, in Tsakane.

The suspect is under police guard.

“Both the Mazda and the Polo are write-offs,” added Kgasago.
