Carnival City goes pink for cancer awareness
During the month of October, visitors to Carnival City will be greeted by trees wrapped in pink material.
Members of the Geluksdal Reach for Recovery Cancer Support Group and staff of Carnival City wrapped the trees on Friday afternoon, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Reach for Recovery is a breast cancer support group of trained volunteers, who have personally experienced breast cancer and its treatment.
The group strives to bring the message of hope to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, by providing emotional and practical support.
The organisation was formed earlier this year, when Reach for Recovery Ekurhuleni and the Geluksdal Cancer Support Group joined hands to become the Geluksdal Reach for Recovery Cancer Support Group.
“With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we aim to bring awareness in our community by wrapping trees, poles or pillars with pink material, to raise funds to assist people affected by breast cancer,” explained Debbie Keyser, group secretary of Geluksdal Reach for Recovery.
“How it works is that participants take to the streets, parks, outside homes, offices, churches and public spaces with pink fabric.
“The attention is focused on breast cancer and its awareness in a visually stimulating way.”
The chairperson of Reach for Recovery, Josey Nonkonyane (66), assisted the group on Friday afternoon, to wrap trees along the entrance of the casino complex.

Nonkonyana was diagnosed with breast cancer 23 years ago and, in 2011, after spending two decades in remission, she received the shocking news that she had bone cancer.
After radiation treatment and what seemed like a complete recovery, a scan, in 2012, showed that she had liver cancer.
The cost of the fabric is R25 per meter and, for more information about the purchasing of material, the following people can be contacted: Sherine Kock (079 800 9003), Debbie Keyser (073 183 6139) or Frances Tshabala (084 675 4714).
