Law enforcement officers were urged to work tirelessly in an effort to combat crime and reduce road fatalities.

Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane encouraged motorists to obey the rules of the roads and appealed to community members to take charge of their own safety during the festive season and beyond.

Nkosi-Malobane made the appeal during a joint law enforcement operation held along the N12 Freeway Westbound yesterday morning (Wednesday).

Law enforcement officers were urged to work tirelessly in an effort to combat crime and reduce road fatalities during the festive season.

“Remember as law enforcement officers you took an oath to serve and protect our communities, love your people and be patriotic public servants. It is high time that you work with greater commitment and exercise the necessary caution while discharging your duties,” said Nkosi-Malobane

According to Gauteng premier David Makhura, high police visibility must be the order of the day .

“Law enforcement officers must restore the integrity of their profession. We must respect our jobs and those who do wrong things must be exposed. Members of Gauteng Traffic Police, Metro Police and South African Police Service must adapt a different approach and attitude to prevent corruption on the roads. High Police visibility must be the order of the day in Gauteng to ensure that communities are safe, and motorists and  passengers must at all times adhere to the rules and regulations of the road,” he said.

Festive Season Road Safety ambassador and actress Simphiwe Ngema took part in encouraging community members from the Waterworks informal settlement to be vigilant on the roads during the festive season and beyond.

She vowed to spread the message of safety, especially during the festive season.

The operation saw three motorists arrested for carrying illegal substances and one woman was arrested for being in possession of a stolen vehicle.
