Thieves target poles along R23

Thieves are having a field day along Heidelberg Road (R23), targeting the streetlight poles for their metal and cables.
The theft is extensive along the stretch of road between Carnival City and Tsakane, where the poles are being cut down and presumably sold for scrap, along with the cable.
During a recent drive along the road, between Carnival City and Geluksdal, the Herald counted 14 toppled-over poles.
The cables from all these poles were gone.
Despite still standing, numerous other poles were also without any cables, and – in some places – both the poles and cables were gone.
A member of the public, who alerted the Herald to the thefts, estimated the cost of the damage at millions of Rands.
Comment has been requested from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
