Herald wins big at Caxton Excellence Awards

The entries in this category were narrowed down to three finalists.

The Brakpan Herald took top honours at the 2016 Caxton Excellence Awards.

The publication, edited by Thelma Koorts, won the Best Free Newspaper category.

The entries in this category were narrowed down to three finalists.

The Herald trounced the Randburg Sun and the Steelburger to claim the top spot.

The annual awards are aimed at celebrating the journalistic, sales, managerial and administrative talent from Caxton’s local community newspapers.

Thousands of entries are received from publications around the country.

The awards ceremony took place last night (Thursday) at the Silverstar Casino, in Krugersdorp.

Other winners on the night included:

Winner: Dave Savides (Zululand Observer)

• Best Front Page of the year
Winner: Bongani Hlatshwayo (Mpumalanga News)

• Best Get It Magazine
Winner: Samantha Richardson (Joburg North)

• Multimedia Journalist of the year
Winner: Helene Eloff (Lowvelder)

• Most Promising Newspaper Journalist of the year
Winner: Erica Abrahams (North Coast Courier)

• Best Get It Journalist
Winner: Nicolene Olckers (Lowveld)

• Best Regular Column
Winner: Bevis Fairbrother – Butthead’s Beat (South Coast Herald)

• Impact Story Of The Year
Winner: Trevor Hlungwane and team – Lily Mine Disaster Story (Lowvelder)

• Best Sports Journalist
Winner: Ettiene van Rensburg (Vaalweekblad)

• Best Headline Writing
Winner: Hilda Pretorius (Polokwane Review and Bonus Review)

• Best Hard News Photograph
Winner: Vivaga Thambiran – First and last time in dad’s arms (Rising Sun Chatsworth)

• Best Human Interest Photograph
Winner: Elsje Vermeulen – Discipline and Honour (Vaalweekblad)

• Best Sports Photograph
Winner: Wouter Piennar -Trap en tuimel (Potchefstroom Herald)
