Robotics workshops coming to schools

Ian Williams, a robotics educator at Curro Helderwyk School, left for the USA on Monday where he will be partaking in a robotics programme.

The visit is part of a joint project between GET Africa, an organisation that collaborates with independent schools in the USA, and the Curro group.

The aim is to introduce new partnerships and opportunities which will benefit Curro schools as it will expand the robotics programme from being a curriculum-based unit for Grades Five and Six, to extra-curricular robotics clubs.

Curro Helderwyk will be partnering with Francis Parker School in San Diego, California.

Their robotics club is known as the WAR Lords.

During Ian’s trip to San Diego, the team aim to introduce the WAR Lords to Curro and plan a robotics competition for June next year.

The educator will spend the mornings visiting San Diego and surrounds, while his afternoons and early evenings, as well as a Saturday morning, will be dedicated to robotics workshops with the WAR Lords.

The WAR Lords team will visit South Africa for two weeks in June 2018 where they will host a week-long ‘Robocamp’ for Curro schools.

All robotics-related activities will be done during this week with valuable assistance, support and mentorship.

The camp will culminate in a competition on the last day, between the robots of the Curro schools who visited San Diego and a robot brought along by the WAR Lords.
