Spotlight: Get to know Sgt Nokothula Mabirise

Sgt Nokothula Mabirise from the Brakpan SAPS is in the spotlight this week.

Sgt Nokothula Mabirise (37) is a vital cog in the wheel at the Supply Chain Management department at the Brakpan Police Station.

The Brakpan resident has a three-year-old daughter, Vuthlari, and has been with the SAPS for 13 years.

• What sparked your interest in policing?

I enjoy helping people, so as a police official I am able to serve and protect the public.

• Tell us about your day-to-day duties.

I provide members with all the necessary equipment they need to perform their daily duties effectively.

• What do you like most about your job? Why?

Knowing that I’m able to ensure that members are well equipped.

• What is your least favourite part of the job? Why?

There is nothing about it that I dislike.

• If you weren’t a police officer, what would you be? Why?

I would have loved to be a nurse and worked for the health department.

As a nurse I would be able to help and comfort the sick.

• Would you let your family members/children do this job? Why?

Yes, as long as they have a passion and love for people.

It is a fulfilling job knowing that you can make a difference in someone’s life.

• Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

Exercising and reading.

• How would you describe yourself?

I’m an introvert, disciplined, self-driven and ambitious.

I’m always ready to learn new things.

• What motivates you?

To see justice being served.

• What advice would you give to young people wanting to work in the SAPS?

To read and educate themselves.

They must also have the passion to work with the public and be willing to serve and protect their community.

• What do you think is the solution to South Africa’s crime problem?

To educate the public about basic policing and justice procedures, and for the community to work hand in hand with the police.

• What’s your favourite thing about Brakpan?

I moved to Brakpan from Daveyton about three years ago and it is more relaxed and quiet, which I enjoy.
