According to the South African Police Service’s national crime statistics, which were released on Tuesday, there has been a decline in many crimes committed in Brakpan.
Compared with the previous year’s statistics, the latest figures, from April 2017 to March this year, show a decrease in crimes such as murder, rape and assault, while offences such as carjacking and common robbery saw an increase.

The full statistics are as follows:
Contact crimes (crimes against a person):
• Murder decreased by 45.5 per cent from 22 cases the previous year to 12
• Sexual offences decreased by 17.6 per cent from 85 to 70
• Attempted murder decreased by 25 per cent from 24 to 18
• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm decreased by 22.2 per cent from 126 to 98
• Common assault decreased by 28.9 per cent from 446 to 317
• Common robbery decreased by 23.9 per cent from 109 to 83
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by 4.8 per cent from 330 to 346.
Sexual offences:
• Rape decreased by 9.1 per cent from 44 cases the previous year to 40
• Sexual assault decreased by 25.7 per cent from 35 to 26
• Attempted sexual assault decreased by 66.7 per cent from three to one
• Contact sexual offences remained the same at three cases.
Subcategories of aggravated robbery:
• Carjacking increased by 39.5 per cent from 43 cases the previous year to 60
• Truck hijacking decreased by 50 per cent from eight to four
• Robbery of cash in transit vehicle increased by two (no cases were reported the previous year)
• Bank robbery remained the same and no cases were reported
• Robbery at residential premises decreased by 21.7 per cent from 60 to 47
• Robbery at non-residential premises increased by 41.9 per cent from 62 to 88.
Contact-related crimes:
• Arson increased by 16.7 per cent from six cases the previous year to seven
• Malicious damage to property decreased by 16.6 per cent from 302 to 252.
Property-related crimes:
• Burglary at non-residential premises increased by 19.5 per cent from 154 cases the previous year to 184
• Burglary at residential premises decreased by 12.2 per cent from 638 to 560
• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle decreased by 14.3 per cent from 357 to 306
• Theft out of or from motor vehicle increased by 16.4 per cent from 293 to 341
• Stock theft decreased by 18.2 per cent from 11 to nine.
Other serious crimes:
• All theft not mentioned elsewhere decreased by 19 per cent from 1 182 the previous year to 957
• Commercial crime increased by 6.4 per cent from 218 to 232
• Shoplifting decreased by 15.5 per cent from 206 to 174.
Crime detected as a result of police action:
• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased by 39.3 per cent from 28 cases the previous year to 39
• Drug-related crime decreased by 16.6 per cent from 397 to 331
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs decreased by 22.1 per cent from 335 to 261
• Sexual offences detected as a result of police action remained the same at one case.
