Following an increase in fake hijacking claims, Brakpan police are warning residents not to open false cases.
“Cases of perjury will be opened against people who falsely report hijackings,” said Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS.’
“There has been a spike in these cases where the ‘victim’ claims to have been hijacked, but has actually sold the vehicle.”
Perjury, which is the willful act of swearing a false oath, is a serious offence that will see offenders have a permanent criminal record.
A person who makes a false statement can be fined or sentenced to jail.
