Tips for buying school uniforms

The sight of your child dressed in a pristine and slightly too big school uniform for the first time might bring a tear to your eye, but before you get this far; you’ve actually got to buy the essentials.

Buy bigger
Buy as large as you can without your child absolutely swimming in the school uniform. Make sure shoes fit well with some room to grow, but not too much. Shoes that are too big can be a tripping hazard. Instead of buying shoes extra-large, if you find a good deal on shoes during the back-to-school sale season, buy the next size up too.

Shop early
This tip is more about convenience than saving money. These stores can take hours to navigate during uniform season, and you may very well walk away without everything you need for your child’s school uniform. But if you’re going to shop early, make extra allowances for growth.

Alter the uniform
If you can’t sew, find someone willing to help. Girls’ jerseys can often be lengthened between the waistband and the top of the jersey. Even simple fixes like moving buttons can stretch the life of a uniform. Cut off and hem pants to make summer school uniform shorts.

Label everything
Label, label, label! Stuff gets lost all the time in schools and you’ve little hope of getting that brand new school jacket back if it didn’t even have your child’s name on.
If you haven’t got the time or the patience for sewing on name tapes you have some easier alternatives: iron-on versions or a laundry pen. A lot of garments have a place for writing a child’s name on the washing instructions label inside which is fine as an extra but less visible to your child when trying to work out which of the 30 jerseys is theirs.
