Hijacked car recovered after lengthy chase
Members followed up information from a tracking company which led them to Voortrekker Road in Brakpan.
An hour-long car chase from Brakpan to Johannesburg resulted in the arrest of two men and the recovery of a hijacked vehicle.
Benoni Flying Squad member Sgt Jaco Powell was on the lookout for a ‘silver’ Ford Focus which was hijacked in Leslie, Mpumalanga, the week before.
The vehicle had eluded SAPS and the tracking company in Tsakane on Sunday and was now moving around Brakpan.
On Tuesday at about 2.20pm, members followed up information from a tracking company which led them to Voortrekker Road in Brakpan.
“Information then started coming through that the vehicle was heading to Benoni along Apex Road,” said WO Grant Giblin, communication officer for the Benoni Flying Squad.

“Constant updates were given with Powell following as the Focus got on the N12 highway towards Johannesburg.
“Constables Thabiso Mabaso and Denovin Norman, Powell’s colleagues, also joined the pursuit from the R24 highway.
“As the Focus entered Johannesburg and passed Jeppe, SAPS members were still on the lookout for a ‘silver’ vehicle.”
At around 3.20pm, Powell arrived in Commissioner Street when he noticed a gold Ford Focus with two male occupants in the bus lane.
Police instinct and experience initiated him to pull the vehicle over after the occupants tried to elude him by attempting to turn off.
With backup arriving from his two colleagues, as well as members from the Johannesburg Flying Squad and K-9 Unit Benoni, and the tracking company, the vehicle was discovered to have false registration plates.
A test of the VIN number revealed it was the hijacked vehicle being sought from Leslie.

The men were swiftly arrested and the vehicle impounded.
The suspects, aged 39 and 49, face charges of possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.
