News of yesteryear

Page through the past.

These were some of the local stories making headlines in years gone by. This week we look back at the Herald of April 18, 1946:

• Motorist’s licence cancelled

David R Naude (60), of Hamilton Avenue, had his driver’s licence cancelled in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court recently when he was found guilty on a charge of driving a car while he was under the influence of liquor.

He admitted a previous conviction for a similar offence.

Naude was also found guilty of altering his licence by erasing an endorsement.

Fines totalling £25 (with the alternative of 24 days’ imprisonment with hard labour) were imposed.

Evidence was given that he collided with a cyclist in Gordon Street on March 27.

The latter was detained in hospital for three days.

• No buns but Easter eggs plentiful

Hot-cross buns are conspicuous by their absence this year owing to the wheat shortage.

Chocolate Easter eggs, despite the scarcity of sugar, have appeared in Brakpan cafes and stores in greater quantity than at any time since pre-war days.

Their variety and novel decorations are a credit to the enterprise of Rand factories and are comparable with similar lines which, at one time, were imported.

Given fine weather, the Easter holidays promise fine attractions.

With the withdrawal of petrol rationing, many people have taken the opportunity to motor to the coast for a brief spell.

Others have planned picnics along the Vaal and elsewhere.

The Rand Show, staging a spectacular post-war ‘come-back’, is likely to prove a big draw.

• Burglars strip local house

Several burglaries of a minor character occurred in Brakpan during the weekend.

The losses involved were small.

The most serious case for some time occurred last week when an elderly couple living in Taft Avenue had their home stripped while they were visiting friends.

They returned to find all their clothing and bedding, including mattresses, gone.

The value of the goods was estimated at close to £200.

• Biscuits to replace bread

The Department of Defence had authorised the War Stores Disposal Board and the Price Controller to release for sale 900 cases of Army biscuits.

The price of each case, which contains just under 47lb. of biscuits, is 30s., which works out at about 7½d. a lb.

• Local man sentenced for theft

Found guilty on two counts of theft, David Z le Grange (28) was sentenced by Mr A Reinach in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court recently to a total of one year’s imprisonment with hard labour.

Evidence was given that he had stolen a piano and a bicycle.

Le Grange admitted a number of previous convictions.

• More trains

Improvements on the East Rand Railway service started on Monday.

Three new trains leave Johannesburg in the afternoon.

The first, at 4.33, is a fast to Germiston, stopping at Benoni and all stations between Anzac and Springs.

The second, at 4.37, stops at Jeppe, President, Germiston, Boksburg and then all stations to Benoni.

At 4.39 another train leaves Johannesburg for Springs and a new train leaves Springs for Johannesburg at 5.40.
