Local club delayed by virus

There is no telling how the season schedule will be impacted but this has derailed the local club’s plans.

The last few days have seen the world around us change.

South Africans have been nervous about the outbreak of the coronavirus.

This pandemic has led President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare a national state of disaster.

The resolution has meant that a gathering of more than 100 people is forbidden.

The impact this has had on sports has been felt amongst various disciplines.

South African Rugby has postponed all matches until April 14.

The Gauteng Sports Council (GSC) issued the following statement:

“The GSC hereby requests and urges all federations to ensure that all meetings, conferences, tournaments, leagues and other sport-related gatherings and activities be postponed, until Mid-April as per the request from the Presidency of the Republic of South Africa.”

This has seen Brakpan Rugby Club’s season being postponed as they were scheduled to face East Rand United in the first match of the season, tomorrow (Saturday).

There is no telling how the season schedule will be impacted but this has derailed the local club’s plans.

“In line with government and SA Rugby we will also have a stadium lockdown until April 14,” said the rugby club’s chairperson Harry Niewenhuis.

“We believe that prevention at this stage is the answer and we will work with authorities.

“All games are postponed and we will revise the situation after said date.”

Brakpan’s players are expected to train on their own while they cannot get together for training at the Bosman Stadium.

They will be hoping their level of fitness is good when the season finally kicks off.
