Blue Monday for baddies
The pair was travelling in a white Volkswagen Jetta.
Local police have warned criminals that Brakpan is a “no-go area” following the arrest of seven men on Monday.
The arrest of two of the men was a result of the community and police working together.
Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS, told the Herald members of the Brakpan Radio Group spotted two suspicious-looking men with cartons of cigarettes outside a Dalview shop at around 10.30am.
“The radio group members reported the incident to police and WO Jan Roos responded and gave chase,” she said.
“The men tried to evade capture and Roos attempted to corner the vehicle.
“At the corner of Hastings and Prince George avenues, Roos fired one shot at the vehicle, which then came to a halt.
“The men got out of the vehicle and tried to escape, but were apprehended.”

Police discovered the Jetta was reported stolen in Kwa-Thema in 2015.
Inside the car, police found cartons of cigarettes which had been stolen from the shop in Dalview.
It is believed that many shops still have cigarettes in stock, but are prohibited from selling them.
“Criminals know this and take advantage,” said van Staad.
The men, aged 27 and 42, face charges of being in possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen goods.
In another incident, sector members were patrolling in Brakpan when they received a lookout from radio control at about 11am about a Ford Bantam bakkie with five occupants who had committed a business robbery in Boksburg.
“While members were patrolling they saw a Bantam bakkie at the Caltex garage in Anzac,” said van Staad.
“SAPS stopped the vehicle and searched it, where they found cash, airtime and groceries in the back, and a pellet gun under the front seat.”
“Members inquired with the Boksburg SAPS who confirmed the details and the five men were arrested.”
The men, aged between 19 and 22, were arrested for being in possession of stolen property.
All of the arrested suspects were due to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court this week.
