SAPS warns of scammers targeting car theft victims

The local SAPS has cautioned members of the community not to fall prey to such schemes.

It has recently come to the attention of Brakpan police that criminals pretending to be police officers are scamming victims of car theft.

“Detectives have noticed there are bogus cops who contact victims informing them that their vehicles have been recovered and in order to speed up the process of releasing the vehicle, they request payment for a tow truck,” said Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS.

“The victim is requested to deposit the money at Shoprite or Capitec.”

Van Staad told the Herald police have a designated tow truck and requests for payments will never be made.

The local SAPS has cautioned members of the community not to fall prey to such schemes.

If you have received such a call, report it to the Brakpan SAPS on 011 744 7100 or 08600 10111.
