Latest Brakpan crime stats revealed

While Brakpan does not feature on any of the national top 30 stations' lists, it does appear on the Gauteng list in three categories.

The SAPS released its latest crime statistics, for January to March, on Friday.

While Brakpan does not feature on any of the national top 30 stations’ lists, it does appear on the Gauteng list in three categories.

Brakpan occupies position 29 for all theft not mentioned elsewhere, position 18 for shoplifting and position 27 for other serious crimes.

The full stats for Brakpan are as follows and are compared to the same time period for the previous year:

Contact crimes (crimes against a person):
• Murder decreased from two cases to one.
• Sexual offences remained the same at 18 cases.
• Attempted murder increased from three cases to five.
• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm increased from 18 cases to 28.
• Common assault increased from 76 cases to 85.
• Common robbery increased from eight cases to nine.
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased from 82 cases to 57.

Sexual offences:
• Rape decreased from 11 cases the previous year to 10.
• Sexual assault increased from six cases to eight.
• Attempted sexual offences remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Contact sexual offences decreased from one case to none.

Subcategories of aggravated robbery:
• Carjacking decreased from 21 cases the previous year to 13.
• Robbery at residential premises increased from nine cases to 13.
• Robbery at non-residential premises decreased from 16 cases to 11.
• Bank robbery remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Robbery of cash-in-transit vehicles remained the same and no cases were reported
• Truck hijacking remained the same at two cases.

Contact-related crimes
• Arson remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Malicious damage to property increased from 37 cases the previous year to 47.

Property-related crimes
• Burglary at non-residential premises increased from 23 cases the previous year to 32.
• Burglary at residential premises decreased from 83 cases to 77.
• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle increased from 36 cases to 41.
• Theft out of or from motor vehicle decreased from 50 cases to 27.
• Stock theft decreased from one case to none.

Other serious crimes:
• All theft not mentioned elsewhere increased from 161 cases the previous year to 181.
• Commercial crime increased from 57 cases to 77.
• Shoplifting increased from 50 cases to 55.

Crime detected as a result of police action:
• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased from one the previous year to eight.
• Drug-related crime decreased from 92 to 81.
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs increased from 29 to 43.
• Sexual offences detected as a result of police action decreased from one to none
