Women take leading role in enforcing the law

Women show they are capable of taking charge in male-dominated sectors.

A women-led roadblock to celebrate Women’s Month was held in Brakpan last week.

Women from the Brakpan SAPS, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and patrollers from the CPF conducted the roadblock along Heidelberg Road (R23), near Koot Street on Thursday.

Although the roadblock was held to address traffic and by-law violations, it also served as a women-empowering initiative to encourage women to take a stand and show the country that women are capable of taking the leading role in enforcing the law.

More than 220 people were searched and 169 vehicles were stopped and searched. While no fines were issued, pamphlets about gender-based violence were distributed to motorists.

“We reach a huge amount of people during an operation like this. It also allows us to make sure people hear what we have to say,” said Dick Hattingh on behalf of the NPA.

“Our community needs to be made aware about what its rights are.”
