National Cupcake Day will bring smiles again on September 26, with the Brakpan team returning to Mall@Carnival.

Every cupcake sold will support families of children with cancer, and supporters can take it a step further by pledging to sell cupcakes on the day.

It accompanies Childhood Cancer Awareness Day on September 15 and was founded by Sandy Cipriano after her own experience with childhood cancer.

The first National Cupcake Day was held in 2012, kicking off the work of the non-profit company Cupcakes of Hope, which provides financial and emotional support to children with cancer and their families.

This year, in Brakpan, three mothers of children with cancer are standing together to bring further awareness to childhood cancer, in support of the Cupcakes of Hope mission.

“Our goal is to create awareness, since most cases of fatal childhood cancer are due to late diagnosis. The more awareness there is, the more young warriors can be helped,” said Leandri van Zijl, one of the three moms.

“Many people don’t know just how many children actually get cancer. We want to show parents of these children that there is help, and they’re not alone,” she explains.

The three mothers represent Lieben van Zijl, originally from Heidelberg but now situated in Brakpan; JP Bruwer from Springs; and Delarize Stevenson from Springs, who sadly succumbed to the disease.

Leandri, JP’s mother, Carla Bruwer, and Delarize’s mother, Karin Stevenson, are sharing their children’s stories in the hope that it will save more lives. As the month progresses, each child’s journey with the disease will be explored with expert insight.
