Brakpan SAPS continues its efforts to create a safer environment for residents by regularly engaging with community members through awareness programmes and initiatives aimed at preventing crime and promoting safety.

“Community engagement is not just a nice-to-have. It is the heartbeat of effective policing,” said Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

“The SAPS can not be everywhere at once, but together with our communities, we can be everywhere that matters.”

Buthelezi, together with Brakpan stakeholders, including the CPF, Department of Health, Department of Social Development, Department of Social Services, local NPOs, Siyabangena Patrollers, Ekurhuleni Women’s Directorate office, EMPD and others, regularly conduct community engagements aimed at challenging lawlessness within the Brakpan precinct and to retain public trust collaboratively.

“The SAPS’ main objective is to build trust and transparency, which is a foundation for solving crimes faster and preventing them altogether, and to encourage shared responsibility to create a united front against crime,” explained Buthelezi.

“The SAPS aims at strengthening social cohesion through awareness and youth campaigns to bring people together, making it harder for criminal elements to take root.”

These community engagements are conducted at the local clinic, schools, churches, and community grounds. Brakpan SAPS encourages community members to shift from being passive observers to active participants with regard to safety.

“This means attending CPF and community meetings, reporting criminal activities immediately, supporting youth, anti-drug, anti-bullying, GBV&F awareness campaigns, and partnering with the SAPS in awareness campaigns,” said Buthelezi.

“Addressing concerns does not mean confronting criminals yourself. It means working smart with SAPS, using safe channels, and ensuring your voice is heard.

“The SAPS would like to encourage community members to have a vision for the future where every street is watched over by caring neighbours, where children walk to school without fear, and where criminals know they have no place to hide.

“That vision is possible, but only if we stand together.”

Buthelezi added that a safer community is not built by the police alone, but by the police and the people united in purpose.
