Smash-and-grabbers still active on R23
The area has been identified as a smash-and-grab hot spot and motorists are urged to be vigilant.
The driver of a black Volkswagen Golf was robbed of his cellphone and necklace when he fell victim to two smash-and-grab thieves last Tuesday.
According to information received from Brakpan police, the victim was stationary at the traffic lights at the intersection of Heidelberg Road (R23) and Dube Street near Leachville at 14:00 when his passenger window was smashed.
It is believed the thief used a spark plug to break the window, after which he reached in through the shattered glass, grabbed the victim’s belongings and ran off.
A second man then tried to open the driver’s side door. The victim, who was armed with his personal firearm, got out of the vehicle and the thief’s accomplice made a hasty getaway.
He told police he fired three shots into the ground and shouted at the men to return his items, a request which was ignored as the pair quickly fled.
The area has been identified as a smash-and-grab hot spot and motorists are urged to be vigilant.
