Traditional rivals clash on the rugby field
Brakpan to face Springs this weekend.
When it comes to rivalries in the Valke Peregrine League the clash between CCC Brakpan Rugby Club against Springs has always caught the attention of fans.
All eyes will be on the Bosman Stadium this Saturday as these traditional giants face off.
“I always say there’s a cycle in rugby. You know a team will stay on top for four or five years and then lose some of the guys who are older and there’s a time of renewal.
“In 2003 for example Brakpan were the champs, in 2004 it was Springs, 2005 Springs, 2006 Brakpan and 2007 Springs.
“From 2013 to 2016 it was Brakpan. And then recently before Covid-19, it was Springs,” said Brakpan’s chairperson Harry Nieuwenhuis.
“We haven’t played each other for two years now and it will be interesting to pick up the rivalry this weekend. Should be a fun day.”
The fact that the two clubs have not played against each other for a while makes Saturday’s clash more difficult to predict.
“Springs have a solid forward pack, heavy as well. They are a side that plays structured rugby. They are very well-coached. Brakpan, on the other side, has a good backline,” said Nieuwenhuis.
“The battle will be upfront for sure. Whoever is going to have the better possession should be able to win the game.

“But it’s not going to be easy, but we’ve seen them play this year and they’ve come to a couple of our games as well. So we’ve been eyeing each other.”
The chairperson expects a big turnout on Saturday as the clash normally attracts a lot of spectators.
“These are usually the teams that end up in the final. They have been the two strong clubs for the Valke.”
The spectators are encouraged to come in early as the u-21 teams face each other at 13:15 while the second team match will kick off at 14.45. The first teams will run out at 16:00.
“We invite all our local supporters to come and enjoy a great day of club rugby,” said Nieuwenhuis.
