Police meet with liquor traders

SAPS warned the Liquor Board would be alerted to any 'problematic' shebeens or taverns.

Local liquor traders have been issued a stern warning by Brakpan police to operate within the confines of the law.

They were cautioned at a meeting between SAPS and tavern and shebeen owners held at the police station on July 20.

Owners of businesses along Wenden Avenue, where a majority of the town’s drinking spots are located, were in attendance.

Items on the agenda included an overview of crime affecting the community in this area, the appointment of managers at establishments where the owner is not always available and counterfeit liquor and contraband.

Police also requested the following security measures be in place:

• Patrons must be searched
• Fire extinguishers should be accessible
• Exit signs must be visible
• Liquor licences must be displayed
• Trading hours must be adhered to.

Station commander Brigadier Fredl Jonck emphasised that taverns and shebeens that are problematic are dealt with accordingly and the Liquor Board will be informed.
