The outdoor lecture theatre

It’s not just school learners that benefit from Melville Koppies.

Many schools bring their learners to Melville Koppies to see for themselves how the first farmers in Johannesburg smelted iron-bearing rocks to form iron and to see if they can spot the remains of the first farmers’ stone-walled homesteads.

Learners are also introduced to the lives of the hunter-gatherers and shown how they lived, the plants they used as medicines and those that they ate. It’s not just school learners that benefit from Melville Koppies.

It’s also a favourite spot for university lecturers to show their students what it really means to be a geologist, to bring archaeology students to experience what life was like then, and it provides a perfect spot for different kinds of science students to study a particular subject more intensely.

Come and visit Melville Koppies on a Sunday. Book a guided tour (phone 079 532 0083) or be there by 08.30 so a guide can point out the many things to see and learn.
