Cell development project progresses at landfill site
The dumpsite remains only partially operational.
Work is currently underway to ensure the Weltevreden landfill site is soon fully operational and operates according to prescribed laws.
According to Ward 97 Clr Brandon Pretorius, cell development at the site has resumed and is proceeding on the perimeter of the landfill site. The cells are areas into which waste will be compacted.
“The cell development comprises three phases. The works underway is highly regulated and the main focus of the cell development is to ensure that once utilised the waste material dumped within the cells does not affect the soil underneath ground level,” said Pretorius, who recently made an unannounced visit to the site where he met with the project manager.
“The project is expected to be completed by the end of February 2024 which will see all the cells developed and ready for utilisation.
“The landfill site, however, still remains partially operational. It currently still only services internal waste removal by accommodating City of Ekurhuleni waste removal trucks.
“This also still excludes private companies but the site remains open for members of the public for the disposal of building material and garden waste.”
Pretorius confirmed the site is still maintained through a plant hiring tender.
“The continued mismanagement of the site has a huge effect on the residents of Brakpan and the state of the environment directly opposite the site poses a huge health risk to residents of Brakpan,” he added.
“The current administration is still not treating this as a crisis and is ignorant to the effect this has on the community. We will continue to fight for the residents of Brakpan and closely monitor the developments at the site.”
