Tips for traveling with children
To help the kids stay entertained and prevent travel tiredness during a long drive, thoroughly plan the route using a map or GPS. Try to divide the trip into smaller portions and schedule regular pauses at interesting locations. Little ones must run about, stretch their legs, and release some energy.
The holidays are coming up, which is a wonderful time to decompress and rest. This holiday, a lot of South Africans will be driving their families to see friends, family, or that special getaway location.
The trip can be difficult for parents who are taking small children. Some kids enjoy spending time in the car, but others just dislike sitting still and might get restless.
Here are some tips for making the car journey with infants and young children safer and easier:
Buckle up
When driving with kids, safety should always come first, and the most important thing to remember is to always make sure they are securely fastened up.
According to the National Road Traffic Act of South Africa, any passenger younger than three years old needs to be buckled up in a car seat. In addition to meeting the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) of South Africa, the seat must be appropriate for their height and weight. To that end, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with Arrive Alive’s helpful recommendations, suggestions, and ideas.
Even after outgrowing a car seat, some kids may still require a booster seat. Boosters are made for kids weighing up to 18 kg, and their purpose is to lift the child so that their shoulders line up better with the safety belt and they are strapped in more securely.
To stop kids from opening the car doors while it is being driven, also remember to turn on the child lock option.
Children must be properly restrained in their seats.
A joyful journey
Play games: Play guessing or word games, or just talk. The car is a terrific place to have lively conversations.
Play some music: Kids respond very well to music, so prepare a playlist that works for them.
Books: Bring a selection of picture books for young children to keep them occupied.
Snacks: To ensure that everyone is well-nourished, bring a range of healthy snacks. Popular choices include biltong, almonds, and dried fruit.
Remain hydrated: Children should drink as much water as adults do. Small children should be provided beverages in sippy cups or with straws that are appropriate for them.
Safety for all
Before you go, make sure to inspect the state of your car. It might be worthwhile having your car examined by a professional if you’re going on a trip.
Don’t forget to bring drinking water, a small first aid kit, and a fire extinguisher. Never compromise on safety since a good journey is one that is safe.
