Truck loaded with copper hijacked

The truck was recovered without its valuable cargo.

Copper valued at R3m was stolen during a truck hijacking in Maryvlei on Monday. The truck driver transporting the copper was accompanied by a security escort.

According to information received from Brakpan SAPS, the 68-year-old driver was travelling along Springs Road in the direction of New Era at around 08:50 when he was pulled over by two men dressed in full EMPD uniform.

The men asked the driver for his licence and inspected the truck and its cargo.

One of the men then asked the driver to accompany him to their vehicle, a white Toyota Quantum that was parked some distance away, in order for his licence to be scanned.

The security officer (59) from the escort vehicle was also instructed to get out of his car, a white Mazda sedan.

When the driver reached the Quantum, he was forced inside and told to lie down. He was robbed of the keys to the truck, his cellphone and cash.

He was then driven to Johannesburg where he was released and his cellphone and cash returned to him.

The security officer from the escort vehicle was threatened at gunpoint after getting out of his vehicle and was robbed of his firearm.

He was also taken captive and driven to Nigel where he was let go. The Mazda was also stolen. It is believed the two “officers” were assisted by a third accomplice.

The hijacked truck was recovered in Springs with the cargo of copper missing.
