Residents rattled after theft from Tweedy Park cottage

The concrete fence was broken to gain access to the premises.

A large opening in the perimeter fence of the Tweedy Park Old Age Home has left residents feeling unsafe.

A theft recently occurred as a result of this vulnerability in the security and a braai and five plastic chairs were stolen from the garden of cottage resident Pieter Brits (68).

As a result, Pieter created a steel structure with scrap steel he welded together to cover the hole.

He then drove around to all the pawn shops and second-hand goods traders in the area to see if any of them bought his stolen goods, but had no luck.

“You move here because you think it’s safe, and then this happens,” one of the residents told the Brakpan Herald.

“There’s no security, and when you report stuff like the hole in the fence you just get told ‘there’s no budget’.”

The Herald asked the City of Ekurhuleni if the fence will be repaired and what the plan is for security, but no response was received at the time of publication.
