Woman in cuffs for removing election boards

Defacing or removing election campaign boards or posters is illegal.

A woman was arrested in Brakpan on Monday evening for removing election campaign boards.

According to Brakpan SAPS, a councillor was notified of the woman’s actions.

The councillor arrived at the corner of Bedford Street and Gladstone Avenue, where the woman was found in possession of the boards.

She was questioned about the removal and reportedly replied that she wanted to use the boards to build a shack.

The Electoral Act 73 of 1998 (section 92) states: From the date on which an election is called to the date the result of the election is determined and declared in terms of section 57, no person may deface or unlawfully remove any billboard, placard or poster published by a registered party or candidate.

The woman was arrested by Brakpan SAPS and detained at the police station.
