Brakpan Pool Club holds inaugural league at Royal Oak Country Club

The cash prize pot was R10 000, with 32 men vying to win the main event.

Brakpan Pool Club, affiliated with Eastern Gauteng Pool Association (EGPA) and Pool SA, held a tournament on Saturday to inaugurate the new club at the Royal Oak Country Club.

The club moved from the Brakpan Rugby Club to the country club two weeks ago. Aron Donohue, who participated in the 32-man main event, won the grand prize, a cash pot of R10 000.

The club, newly under the joint ownership of Shawn Raper, his son Christy Raper and Christo Broodryk, was founded before the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

The club does not charge membership fees. They invite juniors and women to join, and amateurs are also welcome. Members who participate in leagues pay only league registration and playing fees.

Aron Donohue was the 32-man main event champion.

The members are doing well in leagues, with many participating in the nationals each year. Notably, the Brakpan Pool Club was the club that had the most players competing in the nationals last year.

The club’s main sponsors are Secure Tech Security and Status Ceilings. They meet for games in the evenings on weekdays, and the EGPA members participate in leagues.

On Monday evenings the ladies’ division meets, on Tuesdays the open division, Wednesdays are for the seniors, Thursdays are social games and Sundays are for the juniors.

There are several divisions and leagues, including the A-Division for entry-level players, the Super League for more experienced players, the Premier League for skilled players, and the Opens Elite League for the best of the best.

JP Botha was the winner of the plate division.

All divisions, except for Opens Elite, are split between male and female players, as well as by age. In the open, anyone can play against anyone regardless of gender and age, making it the largest league.

The club has a Green Blazer Referee, Steve Bayman, who can referee on a national level. The club plays with eight-ball rules, but blackball is also welcome.

The club members also sponsored a golf day, held at Royal Oak, to celebrate the opening of the new lapa on the premises.

The club’s slogan is: ‘Every shot is a pool shot, so make it count’.
