Fraud cases continue to spike

Local police urge residents to be vigilant as there are many ways you can be scammed.

The Brakpan SAPS has cautioned the public to be aware of ongoing fraud trends. Perpetrators use platforms such as social media, emails and SMSs to lure unsuspecting victims.

“The SAPS are continuously receiving complaints and registering quite an alarming number of fraud cases from community members,” said Brakpan SAPS corporate communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

“The fraudsters will either falsely sell or buy internet advertised products or send an SMS or email pretending to be bank representatives.

“Members of the community are urged to be vigilant and not rely on the internet for purchases and bank account transactions.

“The criminals have realised the convenience of internet banking and marketing, and they are taking advantage of it.

“Rather, use the old way of going to the stores and purchase what you want. Never pay online for a product you haven’t received.”

Buthelezi advised that if you are the seller and have advertised online, do not allow potential buyers to enter your house for the transaction.

“Suggest meeting with them at a public and safe location,” she said.

Buthelezi offered the following tips:

• Do not give any banking information over the phone or on the internet. Visit your bank for such.

• If you suspect any foul play, contact your bank and cancel your bank card immediately

• Refrain from using isolated ATMs during the day and night. Always have company when visiting the bank or ATM.

• Do not allow anyone to disturb you while using the ATM.

“Be vigilant at all times. Criminals are always watching and scheming on how to get their hands on your hard-earned money. They are technologically wise, and they do not have mercy,” she added.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to Brakpan SAPS on 011 7444 111 or 082 10111.
