Young local racers shine at SA Short Circuit Series

These little racers give it their all on the track.

Young Brakpan motorsport enthusiasts Marnitz Otten (8) and Liam Smith (7) accelerated to glory when they recently took on round six of the SA Short Circuit Series at Formula K in Benoni.

Marnitz (#550) competed in the SM50 and 65 classes, where during the qualifying races he secured third place in the SM 50 and seventh place in the 65.

Liam (#238), competing in the PW 50 class, started the day with some bad luck and couldn’t finish the qualifying race as his bike broke during the second lap.

He was, however, able to continue racing on a borrowed bike. During the first heat in the SM50 class, Marnitz started in third position. He had a good run with some excellent racing, and maintained his third place position.

In addition to racing in the SM50 class, eight-year-old Marnitz Otten has also started competing in the 65 class.

It became a bit more exciting during the second heat as Marnitz and his competitors battled to be front runners.

After some excellent racing, Marnitz managed to go over the finish line in second place. A tough race awaited Marnitz in the third heat.

He started in second place, and was soon leading the pack for four of the eight laps. Marnitz couldn’t hold the lead as his bike started losing power due to a loose wire.

In the end, he pushed on through and managed to take the checkered flag in third place. The youngster ended the day in third place overall. Marnitz then took on his second ever race in the 65 class.

Marnitz Otten placed third and seventh in his respective racing classes.

Despite still learning how to change the gears, Marnitz coped well. He even managed to obtain a better time in the second heat, and he secured seventh place overall.

In the first heat of the PW 50 class, Liam started at the back due to the issues during qualifying. Liam was determined to make the best of this race and fought his way back to second place.

The second heat saw some outstanding racing as Liam shot to the front at the start, and led the pack for all eight laps, emerging victorious.

This was Liam’s first ever win. The third heat saw him even more determined and he raced his heart out to maintain first place. Liam also set his own personal best time, and relished in his maiden overall first place podium spot.
