Brakpan’s rising racing stars dominate the track
The boys are ready to bring their all to the final race of the season.
Eight-year-old Liam Smith from Brakpan is thrilled after taking another podium win. The local lad recently competed in Round 7 of the SA Short Circuit Series in Polokwane.
Liam (#238), competing in the PW 50 class, has raced only once on this track before, so he took it easy during the 10-minute qualifying session to get familiar with the track.
He placed fourth during qualifying which meant he would start heat one in fourth place. Determined to win, Liam started with a bang and fought his way to second place for a few laps while wrangling for first place.
Liam then managed to overtake after a close battle and finished the first heat in first place with the best lap time of his class.
Starting in pole position in the second heat, Liam was set on staying there. He gave it his all and finished the heat with another first place and another best lap time.
Starting the third heat in pole position once again, Liam fought to obtain the lead. During the race, one competitor managed to overtake him, but Liam reclaimed first place not long after and finished the day off with another win.
He took first place overall and managed to secure the best lap time of the day. Liam is now currently third in the championship, which means the world to him as this is his first year racing.
Brakpan’s other little racer, Marnitz Otten (8), also participated in this event. Marnitz (#550) competes in the SM 50 class. He was excited to hit the track, and started the day qualifying in third place.

The first heat started well with Marnitz speeding off into second place straight off the line. Marnitz and a competitor battled for second place throughout the eight laps. Marnitz ended the heat in second place.
During the second heat, Marnitz had the hole shot straight into first place. He rode his heart out and managed to stay in first place the entire eight laps, taking his first checkered flag in the SM 50 class.
This is the goal he has been working towards the whole year.
“We cannot be prouder. Marnitz amazed me with his perseverance to achieve this goal,” said his dad, Willem.
In the third heat, Marnitz lead the race for seven laps. Unfortunately, he just could not hold the front of the pack and managed a second place.
The racing in this heat was intense and exciting. Marnitz ended the day on the podium in second place. Marnitz also received the highest award for the day: Rider of the Day.
“His dedication and effort is something to be admired. He is our little champion, doesn’t matter where he places,” said his mom, Izele.
Both boys are looking forward to the final race of the season, which takes place on November 30 in Vereeniging.
