SAPS’ motor vehicle safety tips
Brakpan SAPS share common factors in car thefts.
Brakpan SAPS corporate communications officer, Constable Audrey Buthelezi, shared some tips on safeguarding your motor vehicle against crime this festive season.
“Motor vehicle theft remains a significant concern in South Africa, and the Brakpan SAPS is experiencing an alarmingly high rate of reports,” she explained.
Data reveals a rise in hijacking around all provinces, reaching 5 973 in the third quarter of the 2023/24 period, which is an increase of 365 reported cases.
There are several factors contributing to high cases of car theft, which include the following:
• The high demand for stolen vehicles and parts in the illegal market;
• The constant growth and improvement of tools and technology that can be used to steal cars;
• Lack of anti-theft systems;
• Electronic locking jammers;
• Keyless entry;
• Popular colours that affect resale;
• Owner negligence, such as not checking if the car locked after pressing the button or leaving the car while it is still running, or leaving valuables in sight.
Buthelezi’s tips for preventing car theft are:
• Install deterrents such as steering wheel locks and immobilisation devices;
• Always remain vigilant of your surroundings;
• Trust your instincts and report suspicions to the SAPS;
• Use signal-blocking cases; and
• Regularly update your car security software.
“The public should practice calmness when faced with car theft or hijacking to avoid further trauma from being assaulted or kidnapped by the criminals,” Buthelezi explained.
“Immediately report the incident to the nearest police station and your tracking company if a tracker is installed.”
