Broken traffic lights continue to cause frustration

Motorists have been left to fend for themselves on the road.

While motorists are set to benefit from a public/private partnership that will see the traffic lights restored at one of Brakpan’s busiest intersections, it remains to be seen when the remainder of the town’s broken traffic lights will be attended to.

“The amount of faulty traffic lights within our town is proof that the current administration does not even have the capacity to maintain the most basic infrastructure,” said Ward 97 Clr Brandon Pretorius.

“The non-functioning traffic lights are more than just a nightmare when it comes to traffic, but it is also life-threatening at times and it’s an issue which must be taken seriously to avoid accidents and ultimately, the possibility of loss of life.

“Theft and vandalism do play a role, but the city should stop hiding behind this reality and rather seek progressive solutions.”

According to Pretorius, residents have been left to fend for their own safety on the roads.

“The DA remains resolute in our endeavours to get our traffic lights back online and urges the residents of Brakpan to sign our online petition,” added Pretorius.

In November, the Brakpan Herald sent a series of questions to the CoE regarding the many non-functioning traffic lights in Brakpan, with no response ever received.

The city has again been asked to comment.

• The Herald reported in last week’s edition that the Mall@Carnival, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, local law enforcement, private security companies and Freedom Front Plus PR Clr Riaan van Zyl, is adopting the traffic lights near the mall at the intersection of Airport and Heidelberg roads.

The mall will take ownership of the lights, move the control box onto the mall’s premises to better safeguard it, and provide power to the lights even during load-shedding.
