Temporary shutdown of Weltevreden Landfill Site due to illegal mining activities

Due to ongoing volatility, the public is urged to steer clear of the area.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has announced the temporary closure of the Weltevreden Landfill Site in Brakpan, citing escalating criminal activity linked to illegal mining.

“Recently, a shootout ensued amongst the illegal miners on one of the facility’s working phases, forcing the EMPD to deploy officers to monitor the situation closely,” said CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“No injuries have been reported and the EMPD remains on high alert.

“Members of the public are advised to avoid the area as the situation remains volatile,” said Dlamini.

In the meantime, members of the public are advised to use nearby landfill sites such as the Rietfontein Landfill Site in Kwa Thema and the Rooikraal Landfill Site in Dawn Park, Boksburg.
