Brakpan SAPS crack down on second-hand goods compliance
Seven businesses were inspected and two were issued fines for non-compliance.
Brakpan SAPS in collaboration with CPF, Prasa, CPI Security, crime prevention wardens, Transnet and the SAPS Rapid Response Unit surprised local scrap metal dealers with a visit last Thursday.
Parade was conducted by the Brakpan SAPS station commander Brigadier Johanna Ngoma, supported by Vispol commander Colonel Robert Makopo, on the station grounds.
Law enforcers concentrated on local scrap yards, where stakeholders searched the workshops thoroughly, looking to identify cables and uncover stolen goods.
According to police, Brakpan has seen a rise in the theft of gate motors, and the operation aimed to ensure scrap yard owners don’t purchase the stolen motors.

Prasa and Transnet were also looking to identify unauthorised and illegal possession of different types of cables. Seven scrap yards were visited during the operation, two of which each received R2 500 fines for non-compliance.
The designated SAPS second-hand goods officer, Sergeant Smangele Kunene, said that SAPS is working hard to ensure compliance of businesses and scrap yards.
“They will not be immune to the process, especially because of related criminal trends which include theft of gate motors and tampering with infrastructure,” said Kunene.
