Non-compliant spaza shops shut down
The operation also saw five shop owners fined, and two illegal immigrants arrested.
Brakpan police joined forces with multiple stakeholders on March 19 for an operation in the area aimed at ensuring compliance and addressing health and safety concerns at spaza shops. The operation saw nine spaza shops visited, three of which were closed for failing to register.
Five spaza shop owners received J534 fines amounting to R5 500 for selling illicit goods and contravening environmental health regulations.
Two foreign nationals were arrested for illegal immigration, and illicit cigarettes were also confiscated.
“Unlabelled, expired, and rotten food products were removed from the spaza shops and taken to the waste department for destruction,” said Brakpan SAPS communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

“Three vendors cooking and selling food along Airport Drive opposite Mall@Carnival were removed and advised about the dangers of their businesses at that particular spot and how their businesses negatively affect the nearby petrol station.
“Food products confiscated from the spaza shops were taken straight to the waste management depot and destroyed inside the waste truck.”
During the debriefing parade, Brakpan SAPS Vispol support head Lieutenant Colonel Pearl van Staad thanked all the role players and welcomed the successes.
The other stakeholders were Daveyton SAPS, Ekurhuleni Environmental Health Department, Department of Home Affairs, Ekurhuleni City Planning, crime prevention wardens, Ekurhuleni Building Control, Ekurhuleni Local Economic Development, and Department of Community Safety.
