Swift police action leads to child rescue and man’s arrest
Brakpan police have been hailed after saving a three-year-old girl.
A 39-year-old man was arrested on multiple charges on Monday after Brakpan SAPS responded to a desperate plea for help from the mother of a missing child.
Brakpan SAPS Crime Prevention Unit members were conducting patrols when they were stopped along Wenden Avenue by the woman.
The mother, who lives in a block of flats, explained to the officers that all the other occupants in the building had allowed her to search their homes to look for her three-year-old daughter, except for one man.
“The mother requested the police officers talk to the man and request permission to enter his flat and look for the missing child,” said Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi.
“The crime prevention members went with the mother and met with the man who was allegedly refusing her to search for her child. The police entered the room where the man resides and started searching for the girl.
“The child was found unharmed on the flat’s balcony. The man told the mother and the police officers that he had no knowledge of how the child got in his flat.”
Sergeant Bheki Sibande and Constables Mzwakhe Khoza and Ntsako Kekana further searched the room and the man, and discovered a packet containing drugs on his person.
“They further requested the man to produce any form of identification, but he couldn’t,” added Buthelezi.
The man was arrested and charged with kidnapping, possession of drugs, and illegal immigration.
“The mother thanked the SAPS members for their dedication and swift reaction which she cited had saved her child from the hands of a criminal,” said Buthelezi.
