What Brakpan schools offer for extra-murals

School is not just about lessons and homework. A well-rounded education includes exciting activities outside the classroom.

Brakpan schools are offering a wide range of extra-curricular activities to enrich their learners’ school experience. From fishing to golf, STEM clubs to cooking classes, here’s a look at some of the unique offerings available at local schools:

ExED Private School – Junior Masterchef
ExED Private School may be small, but it offers learners a wide variety of activities to ensure a well-rounded education. One standout is Junior Masterchef, a cooking programme run by an external provider.

Learners are taught about food safety, how to follow recipes, and are empowered to create delicious meals from an early age. A recent project involved making pizza from scratch.

Sonneveld Akademie – angling development
Sonneveld Akademie, another small private school in Brakpan, works with teachers and external role players to offer a growing list of exciting activities.

One of the most unique is angling. Learners have already mastered basic techniques and taken part in a friendly fishing competition at Trichartsfontein Dam, as well as two kolgooi (casting) competitions held on the school’s sports grounds.

Laerskool Dalview – Young Engineers
Laerskool Dalview offers several academic-focused clubs, including chess, a science club, and Olympiad preparation. But perhaps the most exciting is Young Engineers.

Through this programme, learners build mechanical contraptions using LEGO and other components, learning the basics of engineering in a fun, hands-on way—perfect for inspiring future inventors.

Laerskool die Arend – golf
Laerskool die Arend offers golf as part of its extra-mural programme. Recently, learners had a practice round at Benoni Country Club.

Golf is an excellent sport for young learners, helping them to develop balance, coordination, concentration, and patience—skills that benefit them on and off the course.

Hoërskool Stoffberg – hiking tour
Hoërskool Stoffberg is renowned for its annual three-day hiking tour, held during the October school holidays. Each year, the school selects a route through one of South Africa’s scenic mountain ranges or nature reserves.

This year’s adventure will take place on the Fanie Botha hiking trail in the Sabie area of Mpumalanga, starting on October 3.
