Schools and shops shut down in multi-agency blitz on health and legal compliance

Two schools and three shops were closed for various infractions

Brakpan police took part in a multi-agency operation on June 19 targeting private schools and food-selling establishments to ensure compliance with environmental health and legal regulations.

Lieutenant Colonel Pearl van Staad, head of Vispol support, led the parade and the inspection team, which included the EMPD by-laws unit, Crime Prevention Wardens, the Department of Environmental Health, the Department of Economic Development and the Department of Home Affairs.

Two schools were closed for non-compliance with environmental health regulations and for operating without registration.

The owner of both schools was issued a J534 fine of R10 000 for employing undocumented individuals. Three school employees were arrested for illegal immigration.

Three shops, including spaza shops and supermarkets, were also shut down for failing to produce valid health certificates, not meeting cleanliness standards, and having incomplete business registration documents.

Van Staad thanked all stakeholders for their involvement in the operation. She urged business owners to comply with regulatory requirements to avoid closures and penalties.

She added that such operations will continue, not only to ensure compliance, but also to proactively prevent undesirable situations.
