Attempted murder probe after gunfire erupts in Plastic City
A man was left wounded after a group of armed men opened fire. Police say 23 rounds were fired before the gunmen vanished.
Police visibility has been intensified in the vicinity of the Weltevreden Landfill Site and Plastic City informal settlement following a shooting on Tuesday afternoon.
Chaos erupted at around 16:00 when armed men stormed the dump site, opened fire, and then made their way to the settlement.
According to Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi, it is alleged that a gang of around 15 Basotho nationals emerged from the fields and randomly started shooting at the dump site workers.
“The shooters then penetrated the informal settlement, still shooting randomly, and vanished back into the fields thereafter,” she said.

A 36-year-old man sustained gunshot wounds to both upper thighs.
“He was treated on scene by medical responders and transported by ambulance to the nearest health facility. “A case of attempted murder was registered, and investigations are underway,” said Buthelezi
She told the Brakpan Herald that 23 empty cartridges from a high calibre weapon were recovered at the scene.
Brakpan SAPS station commander Brigadier Johanna Ngoma strongly condemned the shooting and encouraged community members to come forward and provide information to the police regarding the incident.
