EMPD women officers crack down on freeway foot traffic
An increase in fatal accidents on freeways sparked a major pedestrian safety operation.
A pedestrian operation along the N17 highway in Brakpan on August 21 yielded 30 arrests. Women officers from various EMPD units and precincts conducted the operation as part of a Women’s Month programme.
The operation was held from 06:00 to 13:00, and follows an increase in fatal accidents on freeways. During the operation, 30 pedestrians between the ages of 23 and 45 were arrested and taken to the Brakpan Police Station, facing charges of violating the National Road Traffic Act and associated regulations to be on a freeway on foot.
Crossing freeways on foot creates a serious safety risk for pedestrians and drivers, which can lead to fatal road accidents.
The EMPD urges pedestrians to always use designated pedestrian bridges when crossing a freeway.
