Brakpan weekend crime round-up: Cash and cellphone stolen in Leachville street robbery
An overview of crimes reported to Brakpan police from September 12 to 14.
The following crimes were reported to Brakpan SAPS over the past weekend:
Friday – An overhead projector was stolen during a burglary at a business along Wenden Avenue.
• The new owner of a home on Collins Street in Brenthurst arrived at the vacant property to discover it had been stripped of windows, sliding doors, electrical fittings, CCTV cameras, a gate motor and other items.
• A resident of the Mgongo informal settlement along Location Road was assaulted by two intruders in his home. The victim woke up at around 03:00 and saw a man standing next to his bed and another at the window.
When he attempted to escape, the men tied him up with wire and demanded money. He told them he did not have any money, after which they assaulted him and took R1 200 in cash.
The men then dragged him to a nearby shebeen, where they tried to encourage other individuals to assault him, but they refused. The victim was admitted to hospital for medical treatment.
Saturday – An attempt was made to steal a vehicle from an address along Evans Street in Brenthurst. The car owners received a notification from their tracking company that the vehicle was being tampered with.
When they went to the car, they found a window had been broken and numerous items had been stolen from the vehicle.
The car was also idling without the key in the ignition.
• A charcoal-coloured Nissan Navara was stolen from Elliot Street.
• A man was robbed at knifepoint along New Kleinfontein Road in Leachville at around 23:00. While walking, the victim was approached by two men, one from the front and the other from behind. Both men were armed with knives.
The victim was grabbed from behind and instructed not to make any noise. The men then searched him and took his cellphone, R280 in cash, and other personal belongings.
Sunday – A soundbar, a laptop and an iPhone were stolen during a break-in at an address along Landman Street in Oaklane Estate, Sherwood Gardens.
The intruder was scared off when the home owner woke up and found him in the house during the early morning hours. After being caught in the act, he quickly fled the scene. Entry was gained by removing a window.
• A yellow Ford Ranger Wildtrak was stolen from the Sherwood Shopping Centre.
The bakkie was recovered in Vereeniging.
