Village of Hope responds to Plastic City tragedy
From meals to clothing, relief is being offered, but more support is desperately needed.
Local non-profit organisation Village of Hope, in partnership with Meals on Wheels Ekubongweni, has been actively assisting displaced residents of Plastic City, providing them with much-needed meals and support.
They visited the area last week and witnessed heartbreaking scenes of men, women, and children sleeping on the streets.
Many of the settlement’s residents lost everything when their homes were destroyed by fire, including clothing, essential belongings and money.
The NPO also collected clothing, which was handed out to those in need.
“As a team we saw the need in our community and are trying to assist where we can,” said Village of Hope founder Tumie Masolane.
She told the Brakpan Herald that the challenges remain immense and that temporary shelter, clothing, blankets and food is urgently needed.

“Women need their privacy. It’s also cold and not safe out there at night. We appeal to our municipality to step in. Clothes are needed for children and adults, and blankets. They also need food. We are helping where we can, but it’s not enough,” she said.
Tumie pleaded with community members, organisations and businesses to join hands in supporting those who have lost so much.
“Let’s stand together for the betterment of our community,” she said.
Tumie thanked Meals on Wheels Ekubongweni for their food donations, and Mama Nokufika from Meals on Wheels for her partnership and support.
