Brakpan SAPS investigating attempted robbery resulting in fatal shooting
A man is dead and another in cuffs after a failed robbery attempt against a security officer.
A man was killed and another was injured on the morning of October 11 following a confrontation with a security officer who claimed the men and two others had tried to rob him.
Police information reveals Brakpan SAPS were alerted to the shooting in Maryvlei at around 06:00. Officers proceeded to the scene, where they found the body of a man lying face down in the middle of 17th Road, near Ergo Road.
A silver pistol, secured with a black cable tie, was found next to the body. The deceased sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.
A security officer was present and told police that he was walking home along Ergo Road at around 05:40, when he was approached by four men.

The group surrounded him, and one of them pulled out a firearm. In response, the guard drew his licensed firearm and cocked it.
One of the men allegedly said, “He is not going to shoot, he knows the law.”
The guard claims he then fired a warning shot, but the men continued to advance. He then discharged his weapon, and three of the men fled into the nearby veld.
The guard reported that he acted in self-defence, telling police that he had been robbed of his cellphone at the same location earlier this month.

While officers were still processing the scene, a man emerged limping and crying from the nearby veld. Blood was observed on the man’s left leg and an officer approached him for questioning.
The man reportedly stated that he had been with the deceased during the attempted robbery and was shot by the security officer.
The security officer confirmed that the injured man was among the group that had approached him. The injured man was placed under arrest for attempted armed robbery.
The man was then escorted to Pholosong Hospital for medical treatment. Following medical attention, he was discharged and detained at Brakpan SAPS.
