Legends netball players duke it out in netball tournament

Rain was no deterrent for these legends teams as they battled it out on the netball courts.

Legends teams took part in the Abafazi the Legends over 40 netball league finals on October 11 on the netball courts at Hoërskool Stoffberg’s sports grounds.

Twist Real Netball Club hosted the league, which was created by Kempton Netball Club in 2024 for women over 40 to support those who still have a passion for netball but are not accommodated through normal leagues.

The league rotates venues between Kempton Park, Springs, Soweto, Pretoria, Vaal and now Brakpan. The aim is to provide an opportunity for women to be active, fit and healthy while also raising awareness of gender equality, women’s empowerment and domestic abuse.

Twist Real Netball Club consists of women from Brakpan, Kwatsaduza, Benoni, Boksburg and Pretoria, and most members of the club are netball veterans who share their knowledge and experience with the younger generation.

They do this by coaching, umpiring games and hosting skills transfer clinics. The club’s main objective is to promote netball in Ekurhuleni.

“As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the club saw an opportunity to provide breast cancer awareness and education to participants in the league, particularly those who do not have access to information on breast health,” said Mashadi Nonkonyama.

Some speakers had recovered from breast cancer, educators and flyers demonstrating how to do a breast self-examination and teams and supporters wore pink.

The winners of the league were Umoja Girls, with #NetballMasters@Kasi in second place and Twist Real in third. In the final matches, Umoja Girls beat #NetballMasters@Kasi for first place with a score of 26-23.For third place in the finals, Twist Real Ladies beat Rockers Netball Club 33-17.
