Lights installed at Tweedy Park to counter criminal activity

Lights were donated by several donors and installed along the perimeter of Tweedy Park, as well as between the cottages.

Several private security companies gathered at the Tweedy Park Old Age Home on October 15 on a mission to protect the elderly from crime.

The security companies all donated solar flood lights. The lights were installed along the perimeter of the home and between the cottages to help deter criminals.

The premises have been the target of recent criminal activity, with several burglaries, wheels being stolen from of cars, and damage to the fencing around the home.

Part of the problem was the lack of outdoor lighting, creating ample hiding places for criminals and making it hard for volunteer patrollers who stepped in to protect the vulnerable elderly residents.

Freedom Front Plus PR Clr Riaan van Zyl obtained special permission from the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) to whom the property belongs, to install the donated lights.

Regarding the appointment of a security guard for the premises, it is alleged that Ekurhuleni is denying bids.

As it is, the property gate is locked in the evenings and unlocked again in the mornings, which creates its own danger as emergency services cannot access the property to help those injured, ill, or in danger.

The security companies that donated lights are Secure Tech, B-Secure, CP Security, EA-IT, KlipDrif Security, as well as a couple of residents and an anonymous donor.

Comment was requested from the CoE about the ongoing security and maintenance issues plaguing the complex on October 1, followed up on October 6, and again on October 20.

A response was then issued which stated feedback is awaited from the relevant department. This will be published once it has been received.
