Community unites for menstrual health at Padtober event

Generous donations from local businesses and the public helped bring comfort and confidence to young girls in need.

The Bold and Brave Foundation successfully brought menstrual health and dignity to girls and young women in need through its Padtober initiative.

Launched as a community-driven effort, Padtober aimed to raise awareness about menstrual health while providing essential sanitary products to those who need them most.

The initiative was founded by three young Brakpan residents, Tumelo Buthelezi, Massy Hakutangwi, and Brianna Mupaya, who call themselves Bold and Brave.

The young women embarked on this journey after realising that many of their peers struggle due to a lack of basic necessities such as sanitary pads, which makes daily life challenging.

They aim to empower young women to rise boldly and bravely to their full potential without the burden of worrying about basic needs.

The trio led the donation drive at Brakpan Stadium on October 24, where pads were collected from several generous donors, including VC SPAR, Benn’s Pharmacy, Harcourt, Village of Hope, Adullam Biker Ecclesia East Rand Church, Brakpan police, and dedicated community members.

The campaign was held in collaboration with SAPS and the CPF. Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and communications officer, Constable Audrey Buthelezi, participated in the initiative, which called on members of the public to donate pads or make financial contributions.

In total, 1 188 packets of sanitary pads and 156 packets of pantyliners were donated. The beneficiaries of the sanitary pad donations included Siyabonga Africa, East Rand Children’s Haven, and Light of Nation Youth Projects.

Brakpan SAPS Vispol support head, Lieuteant Colonel Pearl van Staad, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the businesses and community members who contributed, emphasising the importance of teamwork and community involvement in youth empowerment initiatives.
