Brakpan weekend crime round-up: Motorist finds damaged car after attempted theft

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from October 31 to November 2.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – A silver Subaru station wagon was stolen from the corner of Park Street and Kingsway Avenue.

• Two TVs and a wallet were stolen during a burglary at an address along Hofmeyr Street in Brenthurst.

Two cameras were damaged during the break-in. The wallet contained foreign currency, a smart ID card and a store loyalty card.

• A security guard was tied up and robbed by four armed men at a construction site along Heidelberg Road (R23) near Leachville.

The guard, who was alone on duty, had been sitting inside a truck when, at around 23:00, four men approached the vehicle.

One of the men was armed with a gun, while the others had iron bars. The men ordered the guard to open the door, and then dragged him out. They tied his hands and legs with his shoelaces before breaking into the office on site.

The robbers took the guard’s cellphone and spent about four hours at the site stealing equipment and machinery, including truck and grader batteries, grader wheels, and a generator. The guard later freed himself and went to a nearby petrol where he asked for help to contact his employers.

Saturday – A white Suzuki Swift was stolen from an address along Wenden Avenue.

• A home along Denne Road in Withok Estates was broken into. An unmounted safe containing cash, a firearm, ammunition and other valuables, was stolen

Sunday – An attempt was made to steal a silver Hyundai Accent parked at the corner of Prince George Avenue and Kitzinger Street.

The incident took place at around 09:00. The vehicle’s owners, a man and his wife, had gone shopping, but when they returned about 20 minutes later, the vehicle was gone.

After searching, they found the car against a nearby wall. The front passenger door was open, and the front right corner of the bumper was damaged. A woman at the scene told the man that someone had been sitting in the driver’s seat and appeared to be having a heart attack.

She claimed she had tried to open the window to help the person. The woman then climbed into an old white bakkie and drove off before the man could take down the registration number.
